Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to twenty and a half years in prison for corruption crimes. Toledo, who is currently in the United States, was accused of receiving bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for favoring it in the bidding for public works in Peru.
According to the ruling, Toledo received at least 35 million dollars in bribes during his presidential term (2001-2006). The former president, through his lawyers, has repeatedly denied the accusations against him.
Toledo is currently in the process of extradition to Peru to serve his sentence. It is noteworthy that this is not the first time the former president has faced legal issues, as he was previously under arrest in the United States awaiting his extradition. Additionally, it was recently revealed that Toledo is suffering from cancer, which could influence his legal situation.
