State of Emergency Declared in Pataz, Peru

The President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has declared a curfew in the province of Pataz, located in the northern region of La Libertad, following the brutal murder of 13 workers who were providing services to a mining company in the area.

In her statements, Boluarte expressed her concern about the lack of security and justice in the region: "From the Executive branch, together with the Ministry of the Interior and our National Police, we go out on the streets wanting to provide security, tranquility, peace; we capture the criminals, we put them at the disposal of the Public Ministry, and they release them."

The 13 security workers who were providing services to the mining company Poderosa in Pataz were found dead after being reported as kidnapped by illegal miners. In light of this situation, Boluarte announced the suspension of all mining activities in the province of Pataz for 30 days, extendable, to allow the installation of the Armed Forces and the National Police in the area.

The president also called attention to the Public Ministry for the release of an alleged leader of the murder of the workers, who was detained by the police in 2023 and then released by the Prosecutor's Office.

In addition to the curfew throughout the district of Pataz, it has been decided to set up a military base in the mentioned locality, where the Armed Forces will take control of the area belonging to the mining company La Poderosa. The request for legislative powers to Congress will be advanced to legislate on urban terrorism. Boluarte demanded a quick response from Parliament to legally define these acts as urban terrorism and allow the National Police and Armed Forces to act within the legal framework against these criminal actions, including extortion in Lima.
