The Government of Peru has declared a State of Emergency for a period of 60 days in 134 districts of eight departments of the country, due to the imminent danger posed by the intense seasonal rains that have exceeded the response capacity of regional governments. This measure, officially published in the newspaper "El Peruano", aims to facilitate the execution of immediate exceptional actions to reduce risk, as well as to speed up rehabilitation efforts in the most vulnerable areas of the Peruvian coast and highlands. The decree covers localities in provinces of the following departments: Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Lima, Ica, and Moquegua. Technical reports from the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) warn that precipitation has reached critical levels, increasing the risk of river overflows and flooding. The declaration of emergency allows the National Government to intervene technically and operationally in the jurisdictions where local authorities can no longer contain the contingency. The situation is a response to an intensification of rains that has caused the blocking of routes and the isolation of various rural communities. Authorities have activated protocols for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the deployment of heavy machinery for the cleaning of riverbeds and communication routes. Peruvian meteorological authorities do not rule out that the list of districts under emergency may expand in the coming days, depending on the evolution of low-pressure systems in the Pacific region.
