Closure of Shopping Centers in Peru Due to Safety Issues

Authorities in Peru have closed two shopping centers in Huancayo and Piura after discovering safety deficiencies. This follows a recent incident in Trujillo where part of a shopping center collapsed, killing six.

Authorities in the Peruvian cities of Huancayo and Piura closed two shopping centers on Monday after identifying "deficiencies" in the same group of one that collapsed last Friday in the town of Trujillo, reported the broadcaster RPP.

The Huancayo Municipality closed the Real Plaza in the city for not meeting the proper inclination in the roof, having only ten degrees instead of the thirty required to ensure the fall and sliding of liquids and hail. This measure was taken following the collapse of a dome in the Real Plaza of Trujillo. According to Joshelim Meza, the municipal manager of Huancayo, the accumulation of rainwater on the roof is one of the hypotheses for the accident in Trujillo.

In Piura, the Provincial Municipality ordered the closure of the restaurant area of the Real Plaza shopping center for not meeting the necessary technical conditions. Observations made by the manager of Oversight and Control, Aldo Díaz, indicate that the louvers of the establishment are broken, which could pose a risk.

Additionally, in Chorrillos, an audit will be conducted at another Real Plaza shopping center since its construction and design are the responsibility of the same company that built the Trujillo shopping center. After the collapse in Trujillo, which resulted in six fatalities and several injuries, security measures have been reinforced in different localities to prevent future accidents.

"The shopping center (Real Plaza of Huancayo) will be closed in its entirety due to the roof having inadequate conditions. As a consequence, a future event could pose a danger to life, body, and health of a person," Díaz expressed.
