Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his willingness to cooperate with the upcoming U.S. government to maintain communication, expand cooperation, and manage differences for the benefit of both peoples. Although he did not directly mention Donald Trump, Xi indicated his concern about a possible change in the bilateral relationship due to the incoming president's protectionist rhetoric during the election campaign.

During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in Peru, Xi highlighted the importance of a stable relationship between China and the United States not only for both countries but also for the future of humanity. Referring to Trump's 'America First' policies, Xi urged both countries to manage their differences and get along in a new era.

In a congratulatory message to Trump after his electoral victory, Xi expressed the importance of cooperation between the United States and China in the midst of intense competition. During the meeting, issues such as China's support for Russia, human rights concerns, technology, and Taiwan were discussed, among others.

Xi warned that in an era of scientific and technological revolution, decoupling and supply chain disruption are not solutions, emphasizing the need for dialogue to prevent misunderstandings and avoid competition turning into conflict. Biden, for his part, urged Xi to dissuade North Korea from deepening its support for the war in Ukraine.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining human control over artificial intelligence usage and improving international security and cooperation in this area. Given the uncertainty regarding the future of U.S.-China relations under the Trump administration, companies like Steve Madden, Nike, and Warby Parker are already diversifying their sources of imports to reduce their exclusive dependence on China.
