Brazil has taken over the diplomatic representation of Mexico in Peru, two months after the Andean country decided to break ties following the granting of political asylum to former Prime Minister Betsys Chávez, sentenced to 11 years in prison for her participation in the failed coup attempt of former President Pedro Castillo (2021-2022). "Since diplomatic relations with Mexico have been broken, that country has the right to request that another country take care of its diplomatic affairs (not consular or economic)", sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported to the media on Saturday. They added that "after all the necessary coordination with Peru, Brazil has taken over." Local media broadcast images of the flag change, from the Mexican to the Brazilian, at the Mexican Embassy, located in the financial district of San Isidro, in the Peruvian capital. In early November, Peru's transitional government, led by the right-wing José Jerí, announced the breaking of relations with Mexico after it granted political asylum to Chávez, who, days after entering the embassy, received an 11-year and 5-month prison sentence for her participation in Castillo's failed coup attempt in December 2022. An act that the Peruvian Executive defined as unfriendly and assured that Chávez, who remains in the embassy awaiting the safe conduct that will allow her to leave the country, was not a politically persecuted person, but had committed a common crime. In addition, the Peruvian Congress named President Claudia Sheinbaum a persona non grata for her "unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of Peru." Brazil also took over the representation of Venezuela in Peru, as both countries broke diplomatic relations after the Andean country recognized opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as the president of the Caribbean nation.
