Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his American counterpart Joe Biden during the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru. Xi expressed his willingness to collaborate with the new U.S. administration, without directly mentioning Trump, indicating his concerns about the incoming president's protectionist rhetoric.
Xi emphasized the importance of maintaining stable communication, expanding cooperation, and managing differences between China and the United States for the benefit of both countries. He also highlighted that it is essential to prevent competition between the two nations from turning into conflict.
Biden, in turn, urged Xi to influence North Korea to curb its support for the war in Ukraine and shared his perspective on the bilateral relationship over the years. Both presidents addressed issues such as China's support for Russia, human rights, technology, and Taiwan during the meeting in the Peruvian capital.
Xi stressed the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation and maintaining human control over decisions related to artificial intelligence and nuclear weapons. For his part, Biden reflected on the need for a stable relationship between both nations for a prosperous future and determined that competition with China will be a prominent challenge in U.S. foreign policy.
In a context of uncertainty regarding Trump's policies, who had promised to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, several American companies, such as Nike and Warby Parker, are already diversifying their sources of import to reduce their dependence on China.
