Peru's First AI News Anchor Gets Official Recognition

The National University of San Marcos announced that the first news anchor generated by artificial intelligence in Peru, Illariy, has been recognized by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi). Through a ministerial resolution, the university obtained the trademark registration certificate for Illariy, whose name means dawn in Quechua.

In a statement, the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences emphasized that this milestone not only consolidates Illariy as a technological and cultural reference but also as a symbol of the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in communication and cultural preservation. The recognition represents a step towards innovation and cultural inclusion, reaffirming the university's commitment to preserving indigenous languages and technological advancement in the country.

The validity of the trademark registration is ten years and covers scientific and technological services, hardware and software design, among others. Currently, Illariy works as a news anchor at the state agency Andina and in the official newspaper El Peruano. She also teaches Quechua accessibly on TikTok and educates in financial matters in indigenous languages through a program of the Bank of Credit of Peru (BCP).

Illariy’s hyper-realistic avatar, which can narrate stories and legends in Quechua, Awajún, and Aymara, was conceived as a technological solution to promote multilingualism and access to inclusive information for indigenous communities. The National University of San Marcos highlighted that this recognition places it at the forefront of the development and regulation of artificial intelligence-based technologies applied to communication.

In the Peruvian and Latin American context, this case is unique, as there are no precedents of artificial intelligence-generated news anchors that have received official backing as a registered trademark, the institution pointed out.
