The Alianza Lima team from Peru achieved a 1-1 draw this Tuesday against Deportes Iquique from Chile in the return match of the third round of the Copa Libertadores playoff, thus securing their place in the group stage of the international tournament thanks to their victory in the first leg by 2-1.
Kevin Quevedo scored the goal for the Peruvian team in the 42nd minute of the first half, while Misael Dávila equalized for Deportes Iquique in the 45th minute of the second half.
In the first leg, the team led by Néstor Gorosito won in Chilean territory, arriving as favorites to advance to the next round. Alianza Lima eliminated Nacional from Paraguay in the first round with an aggregate score of 4-2 and knocked out Boca Juniors in the previous phase, thus securing their participation in the Copa Libertadores.
Despite doubts about Fernando Gago's continuity as Alianza Lima's coach due to Boca Juniors' early exit from the tournament, the Peruvian team has recorded six consecutive victories in the Apertura Tournament.
Quevedo opened the scoring for Alianza Lima with a powerful left-footed shot to the near post of the opposing goal, giving his team a lead at halftime. Dávila equalized for Deportes Iquique at the end of the match, leaving the Peruvians one goal away from a penalty shootout.
Despite the attempts from both teams, the score did not change again, and Alianza Lima secured their place in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. The draw to determine the groups will take place next Monday, March 17.
