Betssy Chávez, a left-wing Peruvian politician and former prime minister, has led Peru to break diplomatic relations with Mexico after it became known that she has sought asylum in the Mexican embassy. This occurred two months after her release from prison while she awaited trial on charges of being an accomplice to the failed coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo.
Chávez, a lawyer by profession, rose to prominence after winning a seat in Congress in the 2021 elections for the Marxist party 'Free Peru', which helped Castillo come to power. She demonstrated political skills that earned her a place in Castillo's cabinet, which underwent a constant rotation of ministers amid one crisis after another in the so-called 'People's Government.' Chávez showed great loyalty to Castillo and stayed with him until the end.
Last week, Chávez stopped attending court hearings, raising alarms about a possible escape. On Monday, it was confirmed that she is taking refuge in the Mexican embassy. Her lawyer, Raúl Noblecilla, stated at the time of her release that his client had not considered 'leaving the country' and that there was a possibility she would run in next year's general elections.
