Mexico Breaks Diplomatic Ties with Peru Over Asylum for Ex-PM

Mexico has broken diplomatic relations with Peru after granting political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is suspected of involvement in a 2021 coup attempt. Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela announced this on Monday, calling Mexico's actions a "unfriendly act" and an interference in internal affairs. According to the minister, Peru wishes to maintain consular relations to protect Peruvians in Mexico and Mexicans in Peru. The political asylum for Betssy Chávez comes as the Peruvian prosecutor's office prepares final arguments in the case of the constitutional breakdown, of which she is accused. Chávez was one of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo's closest officials, and their relationship was evident throughout her time in the cabinet. The final event that exacerbated the differences and led to the rupture of relations was the asylum that Mexico granted to Chávez at its embassy in Lima.
