Peru Condemns Sheinbaum's Support for Castillo

The Government of Peru has criticized the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, accusing her of violating the principle of non-intervention and not respecting the rule of law. These accusations arose after Sheinbaum expressed her support for the former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, who is in prison for his involvement in an attempted self-coup.

According to official statements, Claudia Sheinbaum met with Pedro Castillo's lawyer, Guido Croxatto, and promised support from the Embassy to file an international complaint regarding the situation faced by the former president. In response, the Mexican president stated that they are willing to support Castillo in this situation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru has firmly rejected Sheinbaum's statements, labeling them as a complete disregard for the attempted coup d'état carried out by Pedro Castillo in December 2022. According to the Peruvian government, Sheinbaum's ideologized stance shows a serious disrespect for the rule of law and for the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other countries.

It is worth noting that former president Pedro Castillo is currently detained for his participation in the failed self-coup attempt, and a trial is expected to begin on March 4.
