The Peruvian government has rejected comments made by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, claiming they violate the principle of non-intervention in internal affairs, especially regarding ex-President Pedro Castillo's controversial situation.

Peru Rejects Mexico's President Statements

The Government of Peru expressed its rejection of the statements made by the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, in which they considered that the president violated the principle of non-intervention and did not respect the rule of law. The conflict arose after Sheinbaum showed her support for former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, who remains in prison following a failed self-coup in December 2022. The rejection from the Peruvian government focused on the Mexican president's stance of continuing to support Castillo, despite the political controversy surrounding his arrest and the crisis that emerged from his attempt at a self-coup.

In a meeting, the President of Mexico stated that the Mexican embassy in Peru would provide its support to present such a complaint. Sheinbaum's statements were interpreted by the Peruvian government as an intervention in the internal affairs of the country, which contravenes the principle of non-intervention that governs international diplomatic relations. This event was classified by Peruvian authorities as a clear attempt at a coup d'état.

Everything escalated when Sheinbaum, who has shown sympathy for former president Castillo, revealed that she had met with the lawyer of the former Peruvian president, the Argentine Guido Croxatto. The Peruvian Executive classified the Mexican president's expressions as a disregard for the coup attempt that led to Castillo's removal and arrest.

Through an official statement issued by the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, the Government of Peru indicated that Sheinbaum's statements about Castillo's situation reflect a 'total ignorance' of the events that occurred on December 7, 2022. At that time, President Pedro Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress and declare a state of emergency, which triggered his removal and arrest. During this meeting, Sheinbaum expressed her intention to provide support for Castillo's complaint to international bodies for what she considers an 'injustice.'
