The Judiciary has begun the hearing of the oral trial against former President Pedro Castillo and six others accused of rebellion. The Institution reported that the process is taking place at the Barbadillo penitentiary center in Lima. The defendants in this case include former Prime Ministers Betssy Chávez and Aníbal Torres, former Interior Minister Willy Huerta, and former officers of the National Police Manuel Lozada, Justo Venero, and Eder Infanzón.
In a letter published in the state news agency Andina, Castillo claimed to feel "kidnapped" in Barbadillo and denounced that the process against him is a "farce." The Prosecutor's Office has requested a sentence of 34 years in prison for Castillo and his disqualification from holding public office for three years and six months. For the other defendants, prison sentences ranging from 15 to 25 years have been requested.
Supporters of Castillo gathered in front of the Barbadillo prison to show their support for the former Peruvian president. The Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Peru formalized on Tuesday the start of the oral trial against Pedro Castillo, accused of attempting a coup d'état on December 7, 2022, by trying to dissolve Congress during his presidential term from 2021 to 2022.
