The incident occurred in the restaurant area of the Real Plaza shopping center in Trujillo, an area that was crowded at the time of the roof's collapse. Images released by local media show the magnitude of the event, with a large piece of the roof falling on the affected area.
More than 100 agents from the National Police of Peru and the Fire Department are at the scene carrying out rescue operations for the injured after the collapse. The National Emergency Operations Center is also involved, coordinating specialized teams to assist the injured and search for possible trapped people under the rubble.
It was reported that the shopping center had reopened its doors on January 5 after a period of closure due to construction work.
