Buenos Aires, Dec 7 (NA) - Argentine coach Nestor 'Pipo' Gorosito was fired this Sunday from his post at Alianza Lima after losing last Saturday to Sporting Cristal on penalties 5-4, drawing 4-4 on aggregate in the semifinals of the Liga 1 Playoffs in Peru. According to information gathered by the Argentine News Agency, the defeat at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium meant that the 'Blanquiazules' (the team's nickname) will now have to play in the first round of the Copa Libertadores playoff, just as they did in 2025 when they eliminated Boca Juniors in the second round, precisely with 'Pipo' in charge. Despite having reached this stage of the continent's most prestigious tournament, recent adverse results led the club's Board of Directors to decide to end the cycle of the former San Lorenzo and River player. In an official statement published through the club's official accounts on various digital platforms, Alianza Lima announced the dismissal of Gorosito. 'Our institution has decided to terminate the contractual relationship with Professor Nester Gorosito and his technical staff,' the statement read. 'To this effect, the club will make effective the exit clause stipulated for this decision,' the document detailed. After 55 matches in which 'Pipo' achieved 28 wins, 16 draws, and 11 defeats, the 'Blanquiazules' will begin the search for his replacement in an attempt to qualify for the next Copa Libertadores, where they will have to face all the Playoffs to advance to the group stage.
