The National Police of Peru has reaffirmed its commitment to citizen security and continues with the investigations related to a robbery of a public transport van. Although some sites initially reported that the incident occurred in Mexico City, it was clarified that it actually took place at the Juan Pablo II stop, located in Callao, Lima, Peru.
Insecurity remains one of the most concerning problems in many cities in Latin America despite the various strategies implemented to combat theft. Criminals continue to terrorize the population, which has led some people to resist robberies, although this action does not always have positive outcomes.
During the incident, a police officer who was on the van noticed the situation and acted immediately, triggering an exchange of gunfire. "A group of armed criminals attacked this Sunday a public transport vehicle on Néstor Gambetta avenue in Callao. In recent hours, a few seconds of footage showing how a young man died inside the van has started to go viral on social media," some local sources reported.
According to initial reports, the criminals intercepted the van with the intention of robbing the occupants, which led to the armed confrontation. During the events, a sub-official of the National Police was injured, while one passenger lost their life and another suffered serious injuries.
After the circulation of the video on social media, the authorities issued a message highlighting the bravery of the injured police officer during the confrontation, who managed to repel the attack and hit one of the criminals, safeguarding the lives of more passengers.
